About the Artist

Rodney Matthews is the British artist whose fantastical, otherworldly artwork defined the look of rock and metal for generations. His album covers gave bands like Magnum, Nazareth, Asia, Thin Lizzy and Praying Mantis their visual identity — surreal creatures, dreamlike towers and impossible skies that burned themselves into the memory of every kid who ever flipped through the racks. When you picture classic British fantasy rock art, you're picturing Rodney Matthews.

This isn't a record — it's a 500-piece puzzle built from one of Rodney Matthews' most striking pieces, all clockwork strangeness and gorgeous detail that rewards you the longer you stare at it. Piecing it together forces you to really see the artwork, corner by corner, the way you did as a teenager holding a gatefold sleeve under the light. If you grew up with these covers on your wall, this belongs on your table. Commissioned for Avantasia, the German supergroup metal opera project created by Tobias Sammet, for his concept opus ‘The Mystery of Time’. Sammet himself contributed to the album design, stating that he required a medieval town scene, featuring a mislaid timepiece in the snow and a time machine visible in the distance.
