About the Artist
Rodney Matthews is the British artist whose fantasy and sci-fi paintings became the visual signature of rock and metal for generations. His work fronted albums for Magnum, Nazareth, Asia, Thin Lizzy and Praying Mantis, turning gatefold sleeves into worlds you could get lost in. If you grew up staring at record covers instead of just listening to them, you already know his hand.
Press
This 500-piece puzzle brings one of Matthews' vivid, otherworldly scenes off the album shelf and onto your table. The detail is exactly what you'd expect from a man who spent decades painting dragons, spires and impossible skies for the biggest names in rock. A proper bit of art for anyone who loves the covers as much as the music behind them. Commissioned by British heavy metal rock band Diamond Head for their second studio album. Vocalist and guitarist Sean Harris gave Matthews a fairly accurate ballpoint sketch of how the layout should look. In addition to the “Gateway to Hell” on the right, he wanted facsimiles of Michael Moorcock’s Tanelorn city and the albino warrior Elric, in the characterisation Matthews had already established.
