King's X are the Texas trio who bent rock into their own shape — Doug Pinnick's soul-drenched roar and thundering bass, Ty Tabor's melodic guitar smarts, and Jerry Gaskill's muscular drumming locked together like nothing else in the game. They wrote the blueprint that Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and half the alt-metal scene borrowed from, marrying heavy groove to gospel-sized harmonies. Few bands hit this hard while sounding this human.

1994's Dogman is King's X at their heaviest and most raw, produced by Brendan O'Brien and stripped of the studio gloss that softened their earlier records. The title track grinds like a diesel engine, 'Black The Sky' brings the doom, and their scorched cover of Hendrix's 'Manic Depression' closes things with proper fire — but it's tracks like 'Pretend' and 'Sunshine Rain' that show the songwriting never took a back seat to the crunch. Music On Vinyl have done it justice, and this is the one to reach for if you want King's X with the gloves off.
